Another spectacular golf major is upon us, The 106th PGA Championship. The coveted Wanamaker trophy is once again up for grabs and there are many in form golfers to look out for this week at The Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky.

The PGA Championship is known for its competitive intensity and dramatic moments, often producing thrilling finishes and showcasing exceptional golfing talent, will we see Brooks Koepka join Tiger on four wins of this prestigious tournament or will a new up and coming talent like Ludvig Åberg steal the show and make the bookies regret their odds. One thing is for sure, it is a must watch event in the golfing calendar

Let us take a closer look at what the course, field of players and event have in store for us golf enthusiasts.

Setting the Stage for Championship Golf

Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Valhalla Golf Club stands as a premier destination for championship golf tournaments, including the upcoming event set to unfold on its storied grounds. This acclaimed course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, promises a challenging yet spectacular landscape that will test the skills of the world's top golfers.

Course Highlights - Signature Holes:

  • No. 3, “Honest Abe” is a challenging par 3 at Valhalla Golf Club, named after Kentucky's only president. Around 190 metres from the tips, Floyd’s Fork* sweeps around to the right of the green, which is guarded by bunkers on both sides, posing a challenge for golfers. Misreading the wind can be dangerous, pushing shots to the right and potentially into hazards.

* Floyd's Fork is a prominent natural feature at Valhalla Golf Club. It is a meandering stream that winds through the golf course, adding beauty and challenge to several holes, including "Honest Abe". The stream flows to the right of the green on this hole, creating strategic considerations for golfers aiming to avoid hazards and bunkers. The presence of Floyd's Fork adds both aesthetic appeal and difficulty to the course, influencing shot selection and course management, particularly on holes where the stream comes into play. Understanding and navigating Floyd's Fork effectively is essential for golfers looking to score well and enjoy the unique natural surroundings of Valhalla Golf Club.

  • No. 13, “The Limestone Hole” is the shortest par 4 at Valhalla at around 325m from the tips. A spectacular 'island' green surrounded by water. Challenges include avoiding six bunkers on the left and requiring controlled spin for accuracy. It is a Par 4 with a history of excitement and big tournament moments.

Championship Legacy

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Valhalla Golf Club stands as Kentucky's premier course, ranked No. 1 in the state and among 'America’s 100 Greatest Courses' by Golf Digest. With a prestigious history hosting PGA Championships, Senior PGA Championships, and the thrilling 2008 Ryder Cup, Valhalla's challenging layout has witnessed iconic moments like a Tiger Woods' playoff victory and a United States' Ryder Cup triumph.

Weather Conditions

Keep an eye on the weather forecast for the upcoming PGA Championship weekend. Meteorologist Stewart Williams predicts partly cloudy skies on Thursday; however, a low-pressure system will bring showers and storms from Friday evening into Saturday morning, with a 60% chance of precipitation and rainfall amounts of up to 19-25 millimeters.

Saturday morning may still see lingering showers, with a 40% chance of precipitation. On Sunday, expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 28°C, but keep in mind there is a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the day, which may create some difficult golfing conditions and some tense moments for those on their couches with an active bet slip.

The Field of Players

In this year's PGA Championship, all eyes are on Brooks Koepka as he aims for his fourth title in seven years after claiming the Wanamaker Trophy last spring. However, Koepka faces stiff competition from a stacked field of contenders, including Scottie Scheffler, who seeks to build on his recent major victory, and Rory McIlroy, riding high after securing his second win of the season.

Unlike other major championships, the PGA Championship features a field composed solely of professional players, with no amateurs or open qualifying. Every golfer competing this week is a seasoned professional, adding to the intensity and prestige of this prestigious event at Valhalla Golf Club.

Tee Fee’s Top Picks for this Week’s Major

  • Scottie Scheffler - Holding the world number one spot since March 2022 for over 80 weeks, Scheffler boasts victories at the 2022 and 2024 Masters Tournament. He also made history by winning The Players Championship consecutively in 2023 and 2024.

  • Rory McIlroy - With four major championship titles, including the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. A former world number one, McIlroy achieved over 100 weeks atop the Official World Golf Ranking. Coming off a fantastic win in his last start, we are hoping that even with some recent personal turmoil, Rory has his best on show again this week.

  • Brooks Koepka - In 2023, he clinched his third PGA Championship title and fifth major overall, could joining Tiger on four PGA Championships be the driving force for a Koepka masterclass, in all honesty I do not think Brooks is much of a record books follower and just takes each tournament in his unique stride. Will this be a major win for a member of the controversial LIV Golf League?

  • Ludvig Åberg – Is our outside pick to become a major champion this weekend. Turning professional in June 2023, Åberg held the top spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for 29 weeks and won the Ben Hogan Award in 2022 and 2023 for best collegiate player in the United States. Following his professional debut, Åberg quickly secured victories on both the European Tour and PGA Tour and was part of the victorious European team at the 2023 Ryder Cup. He has a buttery swing that send the ball a long way down the fairway. At 19-1 odds, could be an interesting punt to those that fancy a cheeky sports bet.

We are on the edge of our seats in anticipation of this week’s major here at Tee Fee HQ and are even more excited to publish our first Major tournament preview. Let us know your thoughts on the upcoming PGA Championship and look out for further insights from the world of golf.
